Are Cavities Unavoidable?

Children are going to lose their baby teeth, sooner or later. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need proper care. At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we believe that cavities in children are not inevitable.

Recent news reports indicate that fewer American children today are getting cavities than just a few years ago. But even one cavitiy is too many, because tooth decay is preventable with proper oral hygiene.

Tooth decay is the breakdown of a tooth’s enamel, the hard surface that encases every tooth. It is caused primarily by bacteria. Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth. They can change food debris into acids, which combine with saliva to form plaque. Plaque sticks to the teeth, and over time, the acids made by the bacteria erode tooth enamel, causing cavities.

As a parent, the best thing you can do for your child’s teeth is to brush them twice a day, beginning at an early age. As the child gets older, make sure he or she learns how to do a good job brushing. Flossing must also begin at an early age.

Brushing and flossing are the best ways to get plaque off of the teeth. It physically removes it, but it must be done regularly and you have to be diligent about it. It’s critical to begin at an early age, and to make sure that it becomes a habit that will last a lifetime.

Just as important as brushing and flossing is seeing the dentist. Children should have their first checkup by the age of one, even if they don’t have any teeth yet. Waiting much longer is risky. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Association, as many as forty percent of kids in the two-to-five age range already have at least one cavity.

And that is where we come in. Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas is a big advocate for dental health in children, and firmly believe cavities in children are avoidable. We provide comprehensive early dental care, and love seeing our young patients for twice-a-year cleanings and checkups. If you haven’t already, schedule an appointment for your youngster today.
