Dental Sealants: Extra Protection

Regular brushing and flossing is, without question, the  best way to take care of your teeth – and your children’s teeth. At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we want parents to teach their children proper brushing techniques at an early age, to start them on a lifetime of good dental health.

But imagine extra protection for those young teeth? That’s what dental sealants are: an added layer of protection that seals out the food and bacteria that lead to tooth decay. Studies show that dental sealants reduce the risk of cavities by nearly eighty percent.

Dental sealants work best on the chewing surfaces of teeth. Here’s how it works. When you bring your child in for a checkup, we’ll clean and dry the teeth. Then we place a gel on them that prepares the area for the sealant.

It only takes a few seconds for the gel to do its work. Then we rinse it off and dry the area once again, before painting the sealant on. The sealant adheres to the prepared tooth surface and forms a powerful bond. The final step is hardening the sealant with a special blue light.

Sealants can last up to two years before another application is necessary. We’ll check its condition during each appointment, and reapply as necessary.

At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we recommend applying dental sealants on your children’s permanent teeth. That’s usually around the age of six. Sealants are good for adult teeth, too, so you might want to ask your dentist about them.
