No Manuals! Your Baby’s Teeth

New parents are often reminded that their little bundle of joy did not come with a manual. If only! As they quickly learn, the responsibility for a defenseless baby can be overwhelming. At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we remind them: don’t forget about dental health!

Parents should bring their baby in for a dental checkup no later than their first birthday, or as soon as their first tooth comes in: whichever comes first. Tooth decay in children is as high as forty percent by kindergarten age, so dental checkups – early and often – are vital.

When a child comes in for that first visit, do we really expect to find a problem? Not at the age of one! Those first visits are mostly meant to introduce a youngster to the dentist’s office, so it doesn’t become a place to dread.

First visits are also the time we can talk to parents about the best ways to take care of those new, incoming teeth. We’ll probably spend a few minutes examining a child’s mouth, and then another fifteen or more about what parents can expect in the immediate future.

Prevention

Preventing cavities is the name of the game!

When kids have few to no teeth, it’s up to the parents to keep their mouths clean. It’s usually enough to wipe out the inside of the mouth with a clean, wet cloth.

As the child grows, we stress:

  • Regular brushing and flossing
  • Dental sealants to help prevent decay
  • Orthodontic inspections

Dental visits for children should never be frightening. Even if a parent has had a bad, past dental experience of their own, they should remain positive. There is nothing to be afraid of!

At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we offer comprehensive pediatric dentistry, and want all our young patients to enjoy great dental health. Call to schedule that first dental checkup with us today!
