Baby’s Teeth: It’s Up To You

Dental health is important for everyone. From children to senior citizens, brushing and flossing twice a day is essential to keep teeth and gums clean, and free of any problems. We stress this every day at Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, tooth decay is the most common chronic illness in children. It can have far-reaching effects on their health and quality of life. That is why proper dental health habits for children should begin as soon as their teeth start to come in, which usually happens between six months and one year of age, though teeth could emerge as early as three months.

When children are that young, it’s up to parents to keep their kids’ mouths clean. Ordinary brushing and flossing is not necessary at this stage. We recommend that even before their teeth come in, use a warm, wet wash cloth to gently clean the gums. When the teeth grow in, it’s enough to brush them with water.

Start using toothpaste when they’re around the age of two. It only takes a small amount, at first: about the size of a grain of rice. Do it twice a day – just like for your own teeth.

Because tooth decay is such a serious issue, there are some important things to remember:

  • Never put baby to bed with a bottle
  • Fruit juice is not recommended during the first year
  • Limit sugary drinks

When baby’s teeth first come in, it’s a good idea to bring them in for a checkup here at Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas. We specialize in pediatric dentistry and early dental care. If you take good care of your child’s teeth, and instill good brushing and flossing habits, you’re helping to establish a lifetime of good dental health.
