Common Dental Issues in Kids
One of the most important aspects of pediatric dentistry is understanding what makes children the unique creatures they are – in other words, getting a handle on child psychology. At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we have created a fun and inviting environment for our young patients.
Some of the most common issues we see in young patients, across the board, include the following:
- Tooth decay. Cavities are preventable, but there has been a measurable uptick in cavities in children nationwide. One likely reason for this is diet. Be sure to limit carbohydrate-rich foods like candy, cookies, and soft drinks. Food deposits bond with bacteria to form plaque, which turns into tartar, leading to tooth decay.
- Gum disease. Also known as gingivitis, this is an inflammation of gum tissue that, over time, can cause bone damage and tooth loss. The leading cause of gingivitis is poor dental hygiene. Teach your child to brush and floss at an early age!
- Tooth grinding. Technically known as bruxism, this is a common childhood issue. It can lead to pain, and also cause damage to primary or permanent teeth. A custom-fitted night guard is the best solution.
