Dental Sealants: Excellent Protection

It’s only been in the last twenty years or so that dental sealants have really come into their own as a valuable layer of protection against cavities, especially in children. We apply sealants to young teeth all the time, at Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas.

Dental sealants are a thin layer of plastic material applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars. This layer provides a protective barrier on the teeth, an extra layer of protection against tooth decay. The plastic seal means that cavity-causing bacteria are unable to penetrate the fissures in teeth that make them vulnerable.

Of course, dental sealants alone are not enough to prevent cavities. For one thing, they do not cover the entire tooth, and for another, sealants are not applied to all teeth. Do not think of them as a force field.

Dental sealants are best thought of as another tool in the arsenal. Along with brushing and flossing twice a day, and seeing the dentist for a cleaning and checkup every six months, they are the best way to protect teeth from decay.

The application of dental sealants is quick and painless. No kid really likes going to the dentist, and we get that. But applying dental sealants is easy, and they’re really effective. Children should understand that they’re really doing themselves a favor by getting them.
