Good dental health is a lifelong endeavor, and it begins early – very early, like when your child is still an infant. If you’re a new parent, you may be feeling overwhelmed, but don’t worry: at Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we’ve got you covered.
Oral hygiene during infancy might seem a little extreme to some people. After all, the little one doesn’t even have teeth yet! Even before teeth start coming in, you should be wiping down the gums, either with gauze or a soft, wet washcloth. Do that after each feeding, whether you’re nursing or bottle feeding.
When the teeth do start coming in (it’s called erupting), then oral hygiene takes a new turn. Even if it’s just a single tooth, get a baby toothbrush (they’re extra-soft, with tiny heads) and clean it. At this stage you don’t need to use toothpaste.
Around the time that first tooth comes in is the ideal time to bring your baby in for his or her first dental checkup. Teeth come in later for some kids, so even if there are no teeth by the first birthday, we like to see them. We’ll answer any questions you may have, make sure the teeth are developing properly, and take a close look at the jaw.
We want that first visit to be a positive experience. (We want them all to be positive experiences, but the first one in particular.) Parents can help them to prepare by telling them all about what will happen, and how important it is to health, and above all, how there is nothing to worry about. You can have your child practice opening their mouth the way we’ll ask them to during the appointment.
Studies have shown over and over that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children. At the same time, it is also mostly preventable, with early dental care at home and regular checkups with Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas. Remember, when it comes to your child’s dental health, we’ve got you covered. Schedule an appointment with us today.
