Teen Braces: A Rite of Passage

For some teenagers, braces are a rite of passage: tangible proof that they are on their way to becoming adults. For others, though, it’s a big imposition on someone who is well on the way to becoming an adult. At Just For Kids Dentistry in Las Vegas, we understand.

It’s important that parents remain as patient as possible with a teenager who is less than enthusiastic about braces. A patient who doesn’t comply with treatment is going to end up with a less than desirable result. And considering how much time (and aggravation) goes into orthodontics, do they really want that?

If your teenager has metal braces, that means, at the very least, that they must keep them clean. Teeth with metal braces require more attention than do teeth without. It’s important to get every last bit of food debris from those braces before going to bed at night. A device like a WaterPik, on top of normal brushing, is an ideal utensil for this.

Some teens are excellent candidates for Invisalign clear braces. Invisalign can straighten teeth without having to use metal. The patient wears a series of clear aligners that are custom-fitted, and gently push the teeth into proper alignment.

One of the great things about Invisalign braces is that they are so subtle. People standing just a foot or two away might not realize someone is wearing them. They’re also removable, so teens can brush and floss their teeth like they usually do, and take them out at mealtimes. It’s important to understand, though, that they must be worn most of the time, including while sleeping, to get the most out of them.
