What to Do During Your Child’s Dental Emergency

When you give us a call, we can walk you through the situation and provide customized advice. We will also get your emergency dental care appointment scheduled right away. In the meantime, here are some guidelines for patients who need emergency dental care.
Knocked Out Teeth | If a permanent tooth is knocked out, wipe any debris off the tooth and try to place it back in the socket and hold it there. If unable to hold it in the socket, you can try to keep the tooth held in your child’s mouth where it will be surrounded by saliva while making your way to our office. If all else fails, place your tooth in a container with milk, saliva, or water. Keep in mind that this is a real emergency and you need to seek help right away.
Chips and Fractures | Rinse the mouth gently, and provide cold compresses to reduce swelling. Place the tooth fragment in milk or water and bring it to our office if possible.
Dental Trauma or Injury | If the injury is life threatening, visit your emergency room or call 911. For other dental injuries, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses to reduce swelling until you can get to our office.
Tooth Pain | If your child has tooth pain, rinse the mouth with water. Over-the-counter children’s pain medication may ease the symptoms, but we will get to the bottom of the problem at Just for Kids Dentistry.
